Harbourline Alliance Backs Regional Housing Plan

Welcomes firm action on the housing targets municipalities keep missing

THE HARBOUR DISTRICT - - The Harbourline Community Alliance supports in full the provincial housing plan set out this week by the province.

“Yesterday’s announcement is the most ambitious statement on housing the province has produced in years, and we support it without reservation.” says the alliance.

“The province has been clear for some time that it expects municipalities to move on housing – and that sits at the centre of our programme, and of how our volunteers have worked in the neighbourhoods. The new intentions go further still, promising a sustained build-out of supportive, rental and attainable middle-income homes across the region. We are especially glad to see funding attached for people with no housing at all, permission for secondary suites, the option to replace one detached house with up to three homes on the same footprint, and minimum delivery standards for each municipality, with amenity rewards for the councils that beat their targets. City council here let the missing middle slip, but we can still work as a partner with the province and get the job done.”

“We ask every local organisation to get behind this approach to housing delivery – to stop stretching out processes that leave more people behind, without a home and without much hope.”

“We have said since the spring that housing is the first priority for residents here, and for us. People cannot keep waiting – and the message from the province was plain enough: put your own house in order and move faster, or it will be done for you. The provincial plan sets out neatly how that action will be taken, and we support that direction.”

The alliance’s housing programme, set out on our platform page, includes:

• Property tax relief for owners of purpose-built rental buildings
• Incentives attached to applications for affordable and rental housing
• Measured conversion of vacant commercial floor space into homes
• A faster city housing strategy and quicker delivery of affordable homes
• A missing middle initiative
• Incentive programmes that keep tenant displacement to a minimum
• Study & fund a city land bank, holding capital to buy sites for affordable housing built with other levels of government and non-profit providers
