Harbourline Alliance Releases Waterfront Vision

A City for Everyone Will Not Arrive Without Bold Choices

THE HARBOUR DISTRICT - - The Harbourline Community Alliance today set out its vision for a renewed waterfront in our city.

“As we build a city for everyone, we have to picture what our city becomes over the next decades, and the waterfront belongs in that picture,” the alliance says. “These shores have welcomed newcomers and visitors for a very long time, and though they have changed beyond recognition, it is well past time we improved the public places along them.”

“We are asking the city to revive and advance the Inner Pier Master Plan (drawn first from the Waterfront Vitality Principles in 2014, and then the Inner Pier Concept Options and Master Plan Assessment Summary papers in 2017) and to begin building what would become the new face of our waterfront,” the alliance committed.

Two open houses in the summer of 2017 drew more than 300 residents to review draft designs for the site, and the room broadly settled on a short list of aims which included:

• A layout and services able to carry a landmark waterfront park and to host events and festivals in every season
• Better walking routes along the water and up into the downtown core
• Programming across the whole year so the site never sits empty and unwelcoming  
• Trade and street life downtown that hold up through the quiet months

“Where the plan stalled was funding, weighed against every other urgent call on the budget. We think public and community investors are ready to put money behind this, to turn the downtown waterfront into a landmark, and the alliance intends to make that case,” the alliance said.

“A working economy sits at the centre of our programme – an economy that pays its own way and hands the next generation a city in decent shape, the alliance said. “That is the city our volunteers have worked toward, and this waterfront vision, started by reviving the Inner Pier Master Plan, is another piece of the programme we are asking residents to get behind. It is a plan we know can be delivered. A steady economy is part of what holds neighbourhoods together, and what turns a city for everyone into something real. ”

A city for everyone rests on six linked areas of work, each one reinforcing the others, together carrying our city toward being safe, people-first, economically sound, fair and open to all.
